For more than 30 years, the University of Kansas Health System’s rehabilitation unit has provided comprehensive inpatient and outpatient treatments for patients whose illnesses or injuries have led to physical or cognitive limitations. Our doctors focus on more than just the physical aspects of treating your condition— we strive to provide compassionate care that also meets your emotional needs. Our rehabilitation specialists provide physical therapy for stroke recovery, occupational therapy to help improve fine motor skills, speech therapy for communication skills, and pain management services during your rehabilitation. Located on the fourth floor of our St. Francis hospital, our rehab unit offers 36 beds and 24-hour emergency physicians available at a moment’s notice. Our team members focus on guiding, motivating, and support you and your caregiver in your journey to functional independence.

Each week, your care team will meet to discuss your progress, review goals, coordinate treatment, and revise your treatment plan as needed. We make every effort to involve you and your caregiver when determining your treatment plan, putting open communication and trust at the forefront of your care.

Inpatient rehabilitation services

We offer many state-of-the-art amenities, resources, features at our inpatient rehabilitation clinic, to provide you with the best outcomes possible. Our inpatient rehabilitation facility offers:

  • Communication skill development — Our speech and language pathologists work to develop your verbal or non-verbal communication skills, as well as address possible swallowing and voice disorders.
  • Easy Street — Located within the unit, Easy Street is a fit-to-scale replica of common community settings that allow patients to practice routine activities like pumping gas, getting in and out of a car, shopping for groceries, conducting bank exchanges and more.
  • Memory and problem-solving skills developments — The rehabilitation team helps patients develop necessary skills for remembering adaptive techniques, solving problems in daily living, and safety awareness.
  • Transitional living apartment — The transitional living apartment provides a home-like setting for patients to practice navigating a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. In combination with Easy Street, the transitional living apartment gives patients an opportunity to practice everyday challenges with the support of a treatment team.
  • Self care skill development — Our nurses and therapists help patients relearn everyday skills like bathing, dressing, and grooming, as well as household tasks and health management such as medications and skin care.
  • Social functioning advice — Our rehabilitation team helps people return to work, find appropriate vocational training, and ree-nter their community for social and leisure activities.
